How many ways can you make a face cleanser

Face cleanser formulas type 1: Foaming face wash formula & foaming face scrub formulas

Okay this one may seem a bit obvious, but we’ll start here! Foaming face wash formulas are great to cleanse normal to oily skin types, and can also effectively remove most water based makeup. They won’t work with waterproof makeup – you can use micellar waters or crème based foaming cleansers for that, or if it’s a really stubborn waterproof formula, use a cleansing oil or cleansing balm formula instead (more information about these formulas can be found lower in the blog).

You can also turn your foaming face wash formula into a foaming face scrub formula by selecting face scrub (foaming) build. Scrubbing agents can be heavy and hard to stabilise in regular foaming formulas, so the foaming face scrub formula builds have been created with a thicker base formula so as to hold your scrubbing agents stable and evenly throughout your formula.

Here are some ideas on how to adjust your formulas to suit very specific skin needs, and make them more individual:

  • Select the low – mid inputs for surfactants for normal skin and moderate foam
  • Select the mid – high inputs for surfactants for oily skin, a deeper clean and more foam
  • Add a low input of oil to normal skin cleansers, but omit the oil in oily skin type products
  • Use superfatting agents to improve mildness in more premium, salon foaming face formulas – the program will guide you on which materials are classed as superfatting agents for these benefits
  • Select extracts from the added extras list to build your product and formula marketing claims
  • Add actives into the foaming face cleanser formula for enhanced activity

Face cleanser formulas type 2: Crème cleanser formulas & crème-based scrub formulas

Crème cleanser formulas and exfoliant products that use a crème base are much milder on the skin than foaming formulas, because they use a much lower input of less powerful cleansing agents (they use emulsifiers compared to foaming surfactants). They are not suited to very oily skin types and most men will prefer foaming formulas too. Crème cleanser formulas and crème exfoliant products are ideal for dry, sensitive and mature skin types where a less powerful clean is preferred, and there isn’t as much oil or build up to remove. Crème cleansers can also remove some waterproof make up.

Face cleanser formulas type 3: Micellar water formulas

Micellar water formulas are super light cleansing products for very oily skin, or to remove waterproof make up. They are really easy to make, and consumers love them, so they are a great addition to a cleansing product range.

Face cleanser formulas type 3: Cleansing balm formulas & cleansing oil formulas

Cleansing oil formulas and cleansing balm formulas are the mildest cleansing formulas for ultra-dry, sensitive and mature skin types. They are also ideal to remove really stubborn waterproof make up.

Cleansing oil and cleansing balm formulas are mostly oil based, so you’ll often need a second cleansing step using a foaming or crème cleanser formula for full removal; unless your user wants the extra emolliency on their skin from these very gentle formulas.

Cleansing oils are completely liquid, and can be applied using a cotton pad or similar. They need to be packaged carefully to avoid leaks. Cleansing balms are semi-solid, and can be applied using a cotton pad or fingertips. Cleansing balm formulas won’t have the same leaking issues that cleansing oil formulas can have, if packaging and transport may be a concern.
