How to create moisturizing formulas for different skin types

You’ve decided you want to make a skin cream, so you’ve logged into the Create Cosmetic Formulas program and are faced with the question: What would you like to create today?

There are a few different types of skin creams you can create, and then multiple ways you can manipulate each of these formulas to suit different skin types. The Create Cosmetic Formulas software also contains mostly natural and naturally derived ingredients – so creating natural skin creams is easy with the Create Cosmetic Formulas program.
This blog will talk you through how to create moisturizing formulas to suit different skin types.

How to create moisturizing formulas for different skin types

1. The different types of skin cream formulas

First, think about the skin type of your user. Not only will what you put into your formula vary depending on the skin type of your user, the actual form of the product will vary to suit their needs and expectations also. Here are some tips:

  • Oily skin types and younger men will generally want a rather light skin cream – in fact, they are more likely to want a lotion rather than a skin cream.
    • In the Create Cosmetic Formulas program, you would select the o/w lotion or o/w crème gel formula builds to get started.
  • Normal skin types will usually prefer a mid-weight cream – a product that is cream like in form, but without residual greasiness after application. In the Create Cosmetic Formulas program, you would select:
    • the o/w crème gel formula build if you are creating a moisturizer for Asian skin types, more mature men, or for use in humid climates; or
    • the o/w cream (pre-blended emulsifiers) formula build if you have access to these emulsifiers and are formulating for most other skin types and non-humid climates; or
    • the o/w cream formula build when using standard emulsifiers and formulating for most other skin types and non-humid climates.
  • Dry, sensitive and mature skin types will look for very viscous creams with a rich skin feel and lasting moisturization. In the Create Cosmetic Formulas program you would select:
    • the o/w cream (pre-blended emulsifiers) formula build if you have access to these materials, regardless of climate; or
    • the o/w cream formula build when using standard emulsifiers in all types of climates; or
    • the o/w body butter formula build.
  • For very dry and mature skin types, they may also look for the intensively hydrating and moisture protective properties that come with the w/o cream formula build.

2. How to adjust skin cream formulas to suit different skin types

Once you have decided on the product form you are going to create, you then need to consider the inputs of key ingredients to suit the different skin types. Luckily, the Create Cosmetic Formulas program helps guide you with every step of selection, but you can still vary this to make your skin cream formulas specifically suited to different users. Here are some tips.

  • For oily skin types:
    • use the lower side of the recommended lipid input;
    • choose lipids described as ‘light’ skin feel, such as esters rather than plant oils;
    • if you do want to include plant oils, keep their input limited and choose only plant oils that mention ‘for oily skin’ in their description;
    • use humectants to boost the moisturizing feeling rather than lipids so there is no greasy afterfeel.
    • choose actives, extracts and essential oils that mention use for oily skin – the program will guide you as to inputs and provide this information for you as you work through your selections.
    • look also for actives that reduce excess sebum and are described as having a balancing effect on the skin.
  • For normal skin types:
    • use the mid- to high range of lipid input where indicated in the formula;
    • choose mid feel lipids with a small input of heavier lipids such as plant oils for lasting hydration;
    • look for lipids that describe their use as suited for normal skin types;
    • make sure you include a good amount of humectants – they are the unsung hero of moisturizing formulas!
    • choose actives, extracts and essential oils that suit normal skin; the program will provide these descriptions as you work through your ingredient selections.
  • For dry, sensitive and mature skin types:
    • Use the high side of the recommended input of lipids as indicated in the formula;
    • Choose richer skin feel lipids such as plant oils for more lasting emolliency;
    • Use the high side of humectant input, they will help boost suppleness in the skin;
    • Choose actives, extracts and essential oils listed for dry, sensitive and mature skin types depending on who you are formulating for.
    • Actives can also be selected to reduce inflammation for sensitive and dry skin types; and for anti-ageing benefits for mature skin types.

Formulation flexibility whilst guiding your ingredient selections

The Create Cosmetic Formulas program is perfect to help guide you with your cosmetic ingredient selections and inputs, whilst still allowing you to make a unique combination of ingredient choices. Remember to:

  • choose the right formulation build to suit the skin type of your user (refer to section 1);
  • follow the program prompts to work through each ingredient category to build a stable skin cream formula; and
  • use the tips in section 2 of this blog to help you tailor your cosmetic ingredient selections specific to the needs of your user.

The Create Cosmetic Formulas program makes it easy to ensure you have all essential cosmetic ingredients so your cosmetic formulas will always come together – then its up to you to pick, choose, and create your individual formulas to deliver the results you are looking for.
