How to create loose powder foundation in 5 simple steps

1. Select Makeup, Foundation-loose powder, as the type of formula you would like to create today, then click Create.

Loose Powder Foundations: Our Create Cosmetic Formulas program uses mica, a lightweight, translucent powder as the base ingredient in loose powder foundations. The program will automatically adjust the input of mica as you add more ingredients.

2. Choose your powder texturiser.

I selected two naturally derived powders: rice powder, for its ability to absorb excess oil from the skin, and hydrated silica, for its silky skin feel and soft-focus effect. Rice powder was incorporated at 10.00% w/w, the upper end of its typical usage range, to maximise oil absorption. Hydrated silica was included at 4.00% w/w, approximately the midpoint of its recommended usage level, to enhance slip and provide a blurring effect on the skin. If you are unsure which powder texturiser to select, reviewing the descriptions and properties of the available powders can help you make a more informed decision.

3. Choose your binders and colourants.

For the binder, I selected magnesium stearate. Binders help the powder foundation adhere to the skin, preventing the product from simply sliding off during application and wear. Magnesium stearate will be incorporated into the formula starting at the midpoint of its recommended usage range to provide adequate adhesion while maintaining a smooth skin feel.

The Create Cosmetic Formulas program will automatically add the colourants at 17.00%w/w. To find your perfect skin blend read our go-to guide on cosmetic ingredients here. and refer to page 11 to choose the shade you wish to achieve. Then turn to page 15 for the input ranges for a loose powder foundation base that makes up the 17%w/w skin colour blend, and you’ll have the perfect inputs to achieve the foundation shade you are looking for.

4. Choose your lipids and antioxidant.

For the lipid components, I selected lauryl laurate (Purester® 24) for its lightweight, talc-like silky feel without imparting heaviness to the formulation. Red raspberry seed oil was also included to provide a marketing story related to its natural content of vitamin A and omega fatty acids. As a plant oil has been incorporated into the formulation, an antioxidant will be required to help protect the oil from oxidation and maintain formula stability.

5. Choose fragrance and effects pigments.

Here you have the option to add fragrance and effects pigments. I have decided to exclude these from my loose powder foundation, but you can explore the options by hitting the “select” button and reading the descriptions.

6. Click Generate Method

Then here is my formula, and here is the method!
