How to create a body balm in 5 simple steps

1. Select skin and hair care, balm-body, as the type of formula you would like to create today, then click Create..

Body Balm: In the Create Cosmetic Formulas program, caprylic/capric triglycerides (CCT) form the base of the body balm. CCT is a lightweight, fast-absorbing, and non-greasy emollient that blends seamlessly with heavier butters. To enhance richness and nourishment, I’ve included 5% w/w mango butter, which helps soften, hydrate, and protect dry or rough skin; 20% w/w isoamyl laurate, providing a silky, dry-touch skin feel; and 1% w/w passionfruit seed oil, rich in antioxidants to help protect the skin from free radicals and environmental stressors. This combination balances texture, function, and skin benefits, complementing the CCT base. The program automatically adjusts the remaining CCT content to maintain overall formulation balance.

2. Choose your consistency factor 

To achieve a balm-like consistency, I’ve included 5% w/w beeswax, which is solid at room temperature, and 3% w/w candelilla wax. The beeswax helps stabilise the emollients in the body balm while providing protection to dry areas such as heels, knees, and elbows. Candelilla wax, a plant-derived hard wax with a higher melting point than beeswax, further contributes to formulation stability by preventing separation of oils and butters. It also forms a protective barrier on the skin, helping to lock in moisture.
 

3. Choose an antioxidant

As always, to protect the formula and the oils from oxidation, I’ve added mixed tocopherols, providing broad-spectrum antioxidant support to ensure stability and extend shelf life. Since there is no water in this formula, the program does not prompt me to select a preservative or pH adjuster.
 

4. Choose your fragrance

For the fragrance, I’ve chosen essential oils to maintain the naturally derived theme of the body balm. Sweet orange was selected to complement the tropical notes of mango and passionfruit emollients, while vanilla adds a sweet, rich aroma, giving the body balm an overall creamy, tropical scent.
