How to create lip balm formulas in 5 simple steps

1. Select Balm – lips as the type of formula you would like to create today, then click Create.

You can make body balms as well! What is the difference between a balm for the lips and a balm for the body?

  • Lip balms: Our Create Cosmetic Formulas program uses castor oil as one of the base ingredients in lip balms – this gives a wonderful lip feel and suits lip balms particularly well.
  • Body balms: castor oil feels a bit too sticky for body products, and you want body products to spread a bit further than lip products, so the Create Cosmetic Formulas program uses caprylic/capric triglycerides as one of the base ingredients, so the product doesn’t feel too greasy or too sticky when applied to the body.

 

2. Choose your oils and pick up to 6 different oils and butters to use in your lip balm formula. 

We’ve used almond and avocado oil and added some cocoa butter to make the lip balm extra rich and creamy. We’ve used 5%w/w input for each, but you could use more or less, or pick different oils and butters completely, depending on how you want your lip balm to feel, and what you want to promote about your lip balm formula.

3. Choose your consistency factor and follow the inputs provided. Not sure what each ingredient does? That’s okay, read our go-to guide on cosmetic ingredients here.


In our example, I’ve chosen carnauba wax as it will make the final lip balm quite shiny on the lips. I have used the midpoint of 9%w/w so that my lip balm is semi-solid and will spread easily over the lips. I’ve also chosen carnauba wax so that my lip balm will be vegan friendly; otherwise you can choose beeswax if that isn’t a preference, as that is a great ingredient to use in lip balm formulas too.

 

4. Choose your antioxidant to make sure your formula will have a good shelf life.

I’ve chosen mixed tocopherols and put them in the formula at the maximum recommended input to help give my lip balm the best shelf life possible.

You could also choose flavours or essential oils at this point too. Our Create Cosmetic Formulas program only lists essential oils that taste good to suit lip balm formulas, and it also has limits on their input to ensure consumer safety.
