How to create face cream formulas in 5 simple steps

1. Select O/W Cream (Face or body) as the type of formula you would like to create today, then click Create.

O/W creams are the most commonly formulated types of face creams, but you can create different types of face creams if you want. Other product forms you could choose include:

  • O/W Body Butter: ideal for viscous, creamy body products;
  • O/W Cream: pre-blended emulsifiers – this product type uses multi-blends of emulsifiers to make formulating even easier, if your suppliers have these specific blends;
  • O/W Cream Gel: a light type of cream ideal for younger skin types as well as for use in humid climates.

 

2. Choose your humectant and gum: this starts to build the viscosity of your formula as well as boost moisturisation and hydration. Not sure what each ingredient does? That’s okay, read our go-to guide on cosmetic ingredients here.

We’ve chosen glycerin and xanthan gum because they are both readily available from most small suppliers around the world. We’ve used the mid point because we’re going to pretend we are new to formulating, and the mid point is always a great place to start when you are not sure on input.

 

3. Choose your emulsifiers and follow the inputs provided.


In our example, we’ve gone for easy to source ingredients, and we’ve used the midpoints again as a great place to start. When you make your first sample you want to know it will work – and the Create Cosmetic Formulas program will work every time. You can then adjust your inputs up or down depending on whether you want it to be more moisturising, spread further or be more viscous.

 

4. Choose your oils and extracts. This will alter how the skin cream formula feels on the skin and also what type of skin it will be best suited for.

We’ve chosen some really nurturing ingredients to suit dry and sensitive skin as well as add extra nutrients. There are hundreds of oils and extracts to choose from, so you can pick and choose to suit your particular skin type or formulation needs.
I’ve used the midpoint again to make sure the formula will provide a really nurturing skin feel.

5. Choose an antioxidant and preservative preservative to make sure your formula will have a good shelf life.

In our example, we’ve decided to choose ingredients that are easy to source and used the maximum recommended input to make sure our product is going to perform well over its shelf life.
